National Friends of Libraries Week

Kirkwood, Missouri 10/10/2014 -- The Kirkwood Public Library will be spending the entire week of October 19-25, 2014, celebrating its Friends of the Library group as part of the ninth annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. The Friends of the Kirkwood Public Library were established in 1978 and have raised over $890,000 for the library to date. Currently over 450 community members contribute annually to the Friends and nearly 150 of these contributors actively volunteer their time to assist the group with fundraising and social efforts that include the used book sales, Books & Beyond store in the Library, and Reader’s Circle.

“Any day that you visit the Kirkwood Public Library you are likely to find a most age-diverse group of individuals, from the parent sharing the joy of a story book with their toddler to a (very) senior citizen enriching their vast lifetime of learning and reading,” said Friends president Liz Walker.  The library is a free place, open to all.  Being a member of the Friends is a way to support this truly special resource in our community.” Other officers of the organization are Nancy Prendergast, Secretary; and Silvia Madeo, Treasurer.

The Friends will be holding a membership drive from October 19 through October 25 from 10-4 in the Kirkwood Library lobby.  They will be including a book lover’s daily calendar when you sign up for a Friends membership.  “Thank you card” to Friends signed by the library staff will be posted throughout the library for all to view.  Along with celebrating National Friends of the Libraries Week, we will have Bella Corda performing on Sunday, October 19 at 3:30 pm.  St. Louis Bella Corda features nine of St. Louis's finest young guitarists. All study at the St. Louis Academy for Guitar, and are former members students of the Childbloom Guitar Program.

“How lucky we are to have such a dedicated Friends group at Kirkwood Library,” said library director Sarah Erwin. “Their hard work and numerous gifts have enriched the library.” Please contact the library at 314-824-5770 ext 1021 to find out how to become a member of the Friends.
